How to Keep Your Winter Coat Looking Its Best
When you bought your winter coat, you probably expected it to last for several seasons — and with the right care, it absolutely can. Follow these simple tips to keep it in great condition:
1. Clean before storage
Have your coat professionally cleaned at the end of the winter season. Body oils, perspiration and hidden stains can attract moths and other pests.
2. Wear a scarf
A scarf helps protect the collar from makeup, skin oils and everyday dirt.
3. Use a proper hanger
Always use a sturdy, shaped hanger to support the shoulders and maintain the coat’s structure.
4. Avoid hanging on hooks
Hooks can stretch the fabric and distort the shape over time.
5. Brush wool coats
If your coat is wool, gently brush it after each wear to remove dust and surface debris.
6. Dry-clean wool when required
Wool coats labelled “dry clean only†should be professionally cleaned around twice a year.
7. Never store a damp coat
Putting a damp coat into a wardrobe can encourage mould and mildew.
8. Skip plastic bags
Plastic garment covers trap moisture. Use a breathable fabric cover instead.
9. Store in a stable environment
Avoid basements and lofts where temperatures and humidity fluctuate.
