A specialist job
How to clean a waxed jacket (and why not to wash it)
If you've ever searched online for wax jacket cleaning, you'll have seen countless forum discussions warning against washing or dry cleaning. That's because a wax jacket can't be dry cleaned in the normal way, and washing with detergents will ruin the wax and proofing.
Re-waxing and reproofing is a specialist job. We clean your wax jacket to the highest standards before beginning the re-waxing, which is applied entirely by hand.

Our process
How we clean and re-wax your jacket
Our wax jacket care is tailored to waxed cotton, focusing on protection, longevity and performance.
Initial assessment
Each jacket is checked for fabric condition, worn areas and existing wax levels before cleaning begins.
Wax-safe cleaning
The old layer of wax is removed, and dirt, grease and odours are cleaned from the cotton without damaging seams, linings or finishes.
Natural drying
Jackets are dried slowly and naturally to keep their shape and prevent shrinkage or distortion.
Hand re-waxing and reproofing
A fresh, even layer of wax is applied by hand, avoiding the collar, zips and fastenings, then reproofed so it's watertight.
Choose your finish
Three wax finishes to suit how you wear it
Choose your finish in the quote section below.
Basic or fashion wax
A basic wax dressing with little or no sticky, oily finish. Ideal for modern wax cotton jackets and garments.
Silk-oil wax (most popular)
Our most popular finish. It has a slightly sticky touch that settles down after a few weeks, and gives a very good water-resistant finish for outdoor use.
Heavy wax
A sticky, oily finish that gives the closest to waterproof that's possible, although this isn't guaranteed. Ideal for riding coats and full-length stockman's coats, but not suited to casual or fashion wear.
The result
Looks as good as new
The first thing you'll notice is that the colour's brightness is restored. Your jacket is protected from grime, because the wax traps dirt and stops it penetrating the fabric, and the wax protects the fabric from sunlight too.

Questions
Wax jacket FAQs
How often should a wax jacket be cleaned?
Most wax jackets only need cleaning every 1–2 years, or when they become heavily soiled or develop strong odours. Over-cleaning can reduce the life of the waxed fabric.
Can you clean Barbour wax jackets?
Yes. We clean Barbour wax jackets, including Bedale, Beaufort, Ashby and similar styles, using methods designed specifically for waxed cotton garments.
Do you reproof wax jackets after cleaning?
Yes. After cleaning, jackets can be professionally reproofed to restore water resistance and the traditional waxed finish. Reproofing is recommended once the jacket is clean and dry.
Will cleaning remove the wax from my jacket?
Cleaning will reduce or remove old, uneven wax, which is necessary before reproofing. This allows fresh wax to be applied evenly for the best waterproofing and appearance.
Can you clean Belstaff and other waxed brands?
Yes. We clean wax jackets from a wide range of brands, including Belstaff, Barbour, Filson, Driza-Bone, Schoffel, and other waxed cotton garments.
Why shouldn’t I wash a wax jacket at home?
Home washing machines, detergents and heat can damage the wax coating, shrink the cotton, and weaken seams. Professional cleaning ensures the jacket is cleaned safely and correctly.
Does reproofing restore waterproofing?
Yes. Reproofing restores water resistance, improves appearance, and helps extend the life of your wax jacket when applied professionally after cleaning.
Can I post my wax jacket to you?
Yes. We offer a UK-wide mail order wax jacket cleaning and reproofing service. Simply place your order online and send your jacket to us securely.
How long does wax jacket cleaning take?
Turnaround times vary depending on cleaning and reproofing requirements, but most wax jackets are completed within 7–14 days from receipt.
Is wax jacket cleaning suitable for older or vintage jackets?
Yes. Older and vintage wax jackets can usually be cleaned and reproofed, subject to inspection. We’ll always assess the condition first and advise accordingly.
How do I clean a wax jacket at home?
Between professional cleans, you can keep a wax jacket fresh at home. Let any mud dry, then brush it off gently, and sponge the outside with cold, clean water. Never use detergent, hot water or a washing machine, as they strip the wax. Let the jacket dry naturally away from direct heat. For a deep clean and reproof, bring it to us. Our guide to wax jacket care mistakes has more tips.
What is the best way to re-wax a Barbour jacket?
Re-waxing works best on a clean, dry jacket. Warm the wax so it is soft, work thin, even coats into the fabric, paying extra attention to seams and creases, then leave the jacket somewhere warm to cure, ideally overnight. Doing it yourself is fiddly and can leave a patchy finish, so many customers choose our service instead: your jacket is cleaned first, then re-waxed by hand to restore its water resistance.
